OSU Blooms In An OU Yard

So, it's been scorching hot, with a droughty winter, and this is just a poor year to try to grow anything. But wouldn't you know, "volunteer" things that I do hardly anything to are growing heartily!

I'm not much into sports, though I do enjoy watching some football in the fall. Around our household, we are OU fans. Their colors are "crimson and cream." OU's rival, OSU, has colors of bright orange. The "Red vs. Orange" battle can be intense in this state.

So, in our OU yard, what's blooming the best? ORANGE things! Mainly the "Trumpt Vines" with their deep, vibrant orange color. Just take a look:

The Trumpet Vine by our back steps.

The Trumpet Vine bush. (We took a decorative frame out, so now it just sprawls!)

A closeup of the blooms - ants and wasps are having a heyday.

But here's an ORANGE bloom I'm glad to see! It's a beautiful pumpkin bloom on younger Son's pumpkin vine! I sure hope he gets a pumpkin from it.

  1. It's crazy weather all across our nation...either too much water and cold or not enough water and HOT. I feel for you folks with the drought.

I'll have to show My Man the photos of the Trumpet Vine. He was asking me just the other day if when I was a kid we had the kind of flowers the you could pick and put onto your fingers...he's from Missouri. I'm thinking he's talking about your Trumpet Vine. I've never seen them before. They might not grow well in the Pacific NW (I don't know).

  2. Hi gtyyup! This could very well be like what he's thinking of. They're fairly good-sized blooms. Yes, this has been a wild-weather year - everyone seems to either be floating away, or drying/burning up. We've been praying for rain, and thankfully had a small break a few days back with a couple of nice showers moving through. Got an inch from one of them! Now it's back to "sizzling."

  3. did you know I live in that orange town? and would you believe that last year I had a red plant come up volunteer? I am not sure of its name but I liked it so much, I harvested the seeds and scattered them in my flower beds this year. Many of them came up.

I live in the orange town but grew up rooting for the red school, my brother is a professor at that red school too.
So I really like both schools and have a hard time on bedlam days because I would like them both to win.

that orange trumpet plant is really pretty. I have seen several of them in full bloom lately and one was huge, about the size of a storage shed.
