But ... I guess it's SUMMER.
I am NOT a gardener. But I have fun "trying" to grow stuff, and our sons have been interested as well, so that's good. But, BECAUSE I'm not a gardener ... please bear with me when you see overgrown grass, no mulch, and struggling plants! It's amazing this much is still going. My strengths lie more towards staying inside and quilting. :)
An expanse of ours and our neighbor's back yard - dry and brown.
Poor, scraggly flowers, even with water dumped on every evening.
"CRUNCH CRUNCH" goes the grass.
The two zucchini plants, that were planted late, are hanging in there so far. Also have a yellow squash nearby the same size.
Green beans are trying. PLEASE IGNORE THE TALL GRASS AND LACK OF MULCH.
Younger Son's corn hasn't gotten very high, but it's starting to tassle. If it dries out any at all, those leaves curl up all along the edges. But after a good watering, it comes out of it.
Closeup of a corn tassle.
Younger Son's pumpkin vine - it actually has/had a bloom down under there - don't know if it's still in good shape or not. He wants to take a pumpkin to the fair so bad!
Poor, scraggly, burned-up tomato plants - mostly Romas. But look ... a ripening orb of tomato! I think they're supposed to be BIGGER than this, but hey, I'll take what I can get.
Sorry it's blurry, but look again ... two more green Romas!
The struggling broom corn.
At least things dry quickly in the heat - especially things like heavy denim overalls.
The Morning Glories by the east clothesline pole are coming along.
The Morning Glories by the west clothesline pole are REALLY coming along. They both get hefty doses of water each evening. Notice the lush Trumpet Vine in the background that I do nothing to - it must have deep roots! There's another one by our back step, and another one by our shed - all nice and lush and blooming!
Younger Son saw a long runner vine coming out of the Trumpet Vine bush, and thought it would be hilarious to hook it up to my clothesline pole. Ornery kid!
Yay, the Rose of Sharon is blooming!
The rose bush is green - no blooms yet, maybe later?
I don't feel like sitting here right now. But evenings are nice, with shade from trees to the west.
I hate these things, but Hubby found them on sale, and is "teasing" me by putting them out there! I move them back by the house, out of the way, so I can't see them from the window. He conspires with younger Son to put them back out in full view. Back and forth.
And last but not least, and surprising to me, my little patch of wild sunflowers, coming up from birdseed! That may be my only ag/produce entry in the fair!
I know the Lord has my attention with this drought. .I hope others are turning their faces upward as well!! I had some sunflowers come up from underneat the birdfeeder too. .they look better than the ones I actually planted myself ;-) Praying for rain!
ReplyDeletedid you get any rain this morning? I saw parts of OK got good rain today, We did not get much but enough that I am not going to water today.
ReplyDeletelike you, I am wondering what July and Aug. will be like. Could be pretty toasty.
Melanie, we got a great thundershower this morning! Let's all keep praying. "The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof." I'm confident this heat and drought can be busted, if God wills, and hopefully soon! Isn't that funny, these sunflowers and things that just come up volunteer do great? LOL
ReplyDeleteYes, Rhonda, it was a wonderful rain! Moved through kind of fast, but it sure did drench us good while it was here. I kept saying, "Thank You, thank You, thank You, Lord!" Praying we can have more!
