Even after my college years, when I lived with my folks yet, I'd often tag along. These runs were not without adventure. One time Dad and I were headed to this same tiny town, and as we scooted down the highway ... *WHAM!* ... a big turkey flew out of the ditch and smacked right into the front grill on the van! Dad said he looked down, and that turkey was just skidding along on his front! Then he hit the opposite shoulder and did numerous cartwheels. We pulled over and stopped, looked back, and that turkey had gotten up and was wandering around in the ditch! No doubt with a headache.
Anyway, about a year before I met and married my husband, Dad and I had gone over to this tiny town one summer day to do some repair work at the tower. It was located in a pasture right south of town. You could go into town and through a gate to get to it, or (the path we took) you could enter a gate on the west side, from the highway, down in and back up a deep ravine, and reach the tower that way. It was typical to see cattle milling around in the pasture.
This day was no different - cattle relaxing under the guy wires.

And then ... we had an unexpected visitor. A nice horse. A friendly horse. A very friendly, *helpful,* nosey horse.
"Where'd YOU come from???"

"I'm just trying to be helpful. Got any tools in here?"

It was a gorgeous horse.

"Really! I can be a big help if you just let me!"

"Glad I got that fixed - with NO HELP FROM THE HORSE."

"Hmph. I'll just hang out with the cattle then."

"Aww, it's O.K. ... yes, we're FRIENDS."

"Now get outta here!!!" (Kidding. Had to be the most fun, pleasant horse I'd ever been around!)
Horses CAN be nosey. Danny gets so mad at Whiskey, Michelle's horse,f when he's out fixing fence. She takes off with his tools!! hehehehe
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have been going through old photos! Fun memories.
ReplyDeleteLOL, Becky!
ReplyDeleteYeah, Melanie, sometimes something comes to mind, and I remember I've got pictures somewhere. But it's a matter of finding them! :)
love this story and pictures, really made me smile.
ReplyDeletewhen we lived in the country, we had horses for a short time. Their pen was behind our house and from the kitchen window, the horses and I could see each other. When the palomino would see me in the kitchen, he would whinney until I brought out some carrots.
Yep, I am too soft around animals.
Ah, I like that, Rhonda! :) Animals can sure be a blessing.
