Fireworks sizzle, but with the temps we've been having, everything's gonna sizzle. Just step outside the door ... immediately ... *SIZZLE.* *SCORCH.* Both around here and up at my old home in Kansas, fireworks are either being banned, or carefully regulated in a set-up space, due to the dryness of everything. Too many fires already!
It's unusual to have been having over-100-degree temps like we have, because it's been going on since MAY. But it's not unusual to have a HOT July 4th. I remember as a kid going out in the back yard, in the morning yet, to shoot firecrackers. It was already stifling! I was glad to get back into the relatively cool house.
Then in later years, we got in the routine of going out to the city lake for a picnic supper, then wait for the fireworks show. How many times do I remember:
About 5:00 p.m. (the hottest part of the day), load the food and head to the lake.
Find a shady spot to set up for a picnic supper.
Eat said supper, in the awesome heat.
Sit, relax, play, visit.
Wait PA-TIENT-LY for it to get dark enough to have the fireworks.
Suffer heart palpitations when that first big warning *BOOM!!!* goes off.
Enjoy the rest of the fireworks with "oohs" and "ahhs."
Head back to town in the biggest yearly traffic jam in the county, eating dust all the way.
For some reason, I got into the tradition of making a chocolate cake of some kind for the 4th of July. So this year I'm making a chocolate cake from a mix, with canned vanilla frosting that has red-white-and-blue sprinkly thingies with it. Or, I might push the edge and make CUPCAKES out of it instead of a cake.
Wishing everyone a happy and safe weekend - enjoy Independence Day!
I saw that cake mix too. .picked it up and then put it back. .and now wishing I had thrown it in the cart and been done with it. .but I think I may have some sprinkles left from another year instead. Our big exciting food plans are homemade vanilla ice cream and red and blue jigglers on a white plate with whipped cream (from the can!) I LOVE the fourth!!
ReplyDeletesizzling sure describes this weather. We drove to OKC yesterday and I felt so bad for all the cattle in pastures. They were all standing in ponds or under any shade trees they could find.
