Another thing that's been sitting around for ... *ahem* ... months, is this "CHIA" herb garden kit. Well, today was finally the day. My motivation to tackle it exceeded everything else, so this Cowgirl jumped in.
Little terra-cotta pots and saucers lined up.
Moistened "soil sponges" placed in the pots, and water added.
The kit came with six packets of different herb seeds, and I picked Sweet Basil, Sweet Marjoram, and Curled Parsley to plant in the pots. I may see what the Cilantro, Chives and Dill will do in the garden later. (Um ... I think I'm going to have all kinds of Basil and Dill - I already have plenty of that planned for the garden anyway!)
The seeds placed on top of the "growing sponges." The Basil was a dark seed, the parsley was a lighter seed, but the Marjoram was something else. I opened that packet, and it was the slightest "pinch" of miniscule seeds that resembled a pinch of dust! I hope I got them on there alright, could hardly see those seeds!
Newly-sown herbs by the back porch window.
Added sandwich bags to make a "mini-greenhouse" as they germinate and start growing. Hopefully my (non) green thumb will get better with all this as time goes by. I especially wanna try that fresh Basil!
You'll love the fresh herbs for sure! The redbud is gorgeous. Ours aren't quite ready yet. .and predicting freezing weather several times over the next week. .including possibility of snow! Yuck! Enjoy
ReplyDeleteSnow? Really??? Wow! We put our AC in today, as we've had some awfully warm afternoons. But I guess this is the time of year it can do anything. :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE the purple flowering "redbud"? Not very red, but very purple ;~)
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to do an herb garden! Where did you get the kit? Never heard of growing sponges...but they sure look like a quick and easy to plant!
Hi gtyyup - there are several redbuds in the neighborhood, and they're really "purple" - ours looks almost pink compared to them. I got the growing kit from Walgreens - and yes, it was super easy! That was a clincher for me with the "sponges." I hate messing with potting soil. LOL I'm really interested in seeing how the herbs grow on it. I hope you can find one!
ReplyDeleteLOL...I never did get the herb garden going...but I'm so tired of spending my money at the produce section in the grocery store, I'm ready to get going! So, it's been almost a year for yours...how's it doing? I look at the reviews at Amazon.com and they're all over the board...so it's confusing. Was it worth the money?
ReplyDeleteHey, gtyyup! :) Well, this kit was interesting from a "learning" perspective, it was fun for us to see the seeds sprout and grow, but I didn't have much success on getting a lot of growth. But that may be me. LOL (NON-green-thumb!) We also had herb seeds planted out in the garden, but the heat was just too bad, so that was a no-go. I think if I did herbs again, I'd just get little pots, some good soil, and packets of seeds, and do it that way. With the kit, the seeds were right on top of that "soil sponge." I think it might be better with them down in the soil. If you try anything, I hope it works! I may try a pot of basil or something. Best wishes!
