My thoughts are rambling ... so much is going on. Two other members of our congregation had surgery as well, and so far the reports are good. We are so enjoying our new pastor and his wife. The county fair is going on in my original home town, and boy do I wish I could be there! Our own local fair is in a month, and I'm wondering if I want to knit or crochet something. Or maybe bake something. Our younger son already has "lego" things and some drawings lined out to enter. Our lawn needs mowed, so we're working on that. I'm still enjoying my clothesline.
Which reminds me ... yesterday, my younger son and I were sitting on the couch reading some "Cowpoke" books (comics) that I'd found at the thrift store. It's down-home humor in everyday ranch life. I've always liked this comic (by Ace Reid), but they were new to my son. So we had a hoot enjoying them, and I ended up explaining different sayings that were particular to that era. In one comic, the rancher-husband had strung new clothesline for his wife --- with BARBED WIRE. He said there'd be no need for clothespins! I thought that was hilarious, and also thought that would be right up my alley to have a clothesline strung with barbed wire!
Thankful that we had a rainy spell, so we can get fields worked. But now it's back to that typical Oklahoma summer heat. Wow. I AM THANKFUL FOR AIR CONDITIONING AND ICED DRINKS.
My birthday is coming up in just a bit, and this time of year always makes me recall birthdays from when I was a kid. One memory really stands out. It was the year that they had a rocket launch either on or around my birthday, and we were going on vacation to the mountains at that time. So ... my mother made me a very special birthday cake to take with us. She made a flat sheet cake (chocolate), frosted it (chocolate), then put all kinds of fun "moon" things on top to decorate, there were little rubber creatures and other things to make it seem like being on the moon.
We packed the trailer, and headed for the mountains. We got to the campground, and Dad went inside the trailer to fix the little TV antenna. It was up in the corner above a shelf, above the bed. So he leaned on the bed with his knee to reach the antenna. But ...
Mom had put the cake on the bed, with a tea-towel over it to protect it on the ride out there. DAD PUT HIS KNEE RIGHT INTO THAT CAKE! I was just a kid, and I can't remember how mad Mom might've been, but we did laugh at the cake ... it now had it's own genuine CRATER! And the cake was still edible. :) So that was a happy, silly, memorable birthday.
To close, check out these *insanely cheap* cowgirl boot finds from the thrift store recently. I seriously need to join "cowgirl boots anonymous." Seriously. Have a great weekend!
My dad used to be cowpoke lover!! I recall that we had a number of those books lying around too!! Glad that you got the cysts taken care of, and hope the itching doesn't drive you insane before they can come out!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Melanie - so far so good! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's so neat to find a fellow thrift shop shopper! I had extra time Monday in Pratt, so hit the 2 that were open. Found some blouses to wear on our vacation, & didn't spend a fortune! I'm so glad your surgery went well, & you're now on your way to recovery. Ace Reid is my fave cowboy cartoonist!
ReplyDeleteCindy, I am TERRIBLY addicted to this nearby thrift store! LOL Everything is so chea ... ahem, *inexpensive,* and you never know what will be in there. All kinds of treasures crop up! And everything is donated, even workers' time, so all the money goes to help MCC plus some local charities. Thanks for the well wishes about the surgery (ha - looked at that word and thought I'd typed "sugary" LOL), so far so good with the healing. :)
ReplyDeleteSome of those "horse wrecks" Mr. Reid has drawn sure are doozies! Especially when they involve canyons or cactus. OUCH.
Funny story about the b-day cake!! My b-day is in less than a week...7-22...when's yours?
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear your surgery went well...praying you mend quickly~
PS~my favorite shopping is at thrift stores. I get great stuff in Central Oregon when we go there. Today at the cutting I wore a $50 TwentyX shirt I bought for $6.99...can't beat that!
ReplyDeleteHey gtyyup - mine's the 17th! Thanks for the get-well wishes. :) I appreciate that. Sounds like you found a good bargain! I'm pretty much hooked on going to this thrift store here - you never know what you'll find. :)
