Finally - Some Excitement

So far on this blog, most of my posts have had to do with stuff I remember from 'way back, maybe a tidbit of what's going on now. This is because my life consists of a steady stream of:

Housechores.

Homeschooling.

Music practice.

Cleaning the church.

Shopping for groceries and supplies.

Occasional stints in the lunchroom.

Country drives for entertainment.

Not much excitement really happens, it's week after week of the same repeat of routine.

But last night was a little different. Something interesting happened!

Like I said, our main entertainment is to go for a country drive. Also, once in awhile, we'll get out and ride around with our friend and his daughter, eating snacks and yakking and just seeing what the town's doing. Last night hubby and I and our younger son were with them, and had stopped to get snacks. Then ... our friend got a call. His girlfriend's donkey was out, it had escaped the premises. This was a ways down south of here, so we headed that way, snacks in hand. "O.K. --- let's go round up a donkey!!"

We eventually got to his girlfriend's house and picked up a flake of hay and a halter and lead rope. Then we went a mile or so to where this donkey had parked itself in someone's shed in their yard. The sheriff was sitting there with the lights on it, so we could see where it was, or so he could keep tabs on it if it left before we got there. But there it was, laid down resting by a tractor.

Then the real excitement began. The donkey got up and started to wander away. Quickly, our friend's daughter grabbed some mints (like you get at Sonic - the donkey loves them!) and got close enough to start feeding them to the donkey. Then I also went up to it, and eventually got my arms around it's neck, which was the main trick. Then our friend brought the halter and we got the it on the donkey. Then he tied the rope to the hitch on the pickup, and we were ready to slowly lead the critter back home.

So there we were .... creeping down the road with a donkey in tow, with the sheriff pickup behind us. The donkey was a little stubborn, so even though we were going slow, it was keeping the lead line awfully tight, due to stubbornness. We went a good ways, then just before the turnoff to the dirt road .... *SNAP!!!* .... the rope broke! "AHHH ... THE ROPE BROKE!" So we all stopped, and I got out real fast and grabbed a fistful of hay from the tailgate. I headed off into the grass where the donkey was badly wanting to get away from us again. So there it was, night, late, dark, rough grass, and I'm following this donkey, "Come here, Donkey, come here ..." over and over. But this donkey doesn't stop. I knew she was dragging that long lead rope, but I couldn't see it in the dark grass, so I just kept following and talking nicely.

Finally, she got on that dirt road we'd been aiming for. She went down to the road, and notice I said "down." I was so intent on her and her lead rope, that I just about fell down a slightly steep wall of dirt! Now THAT would've been embarrassing. Thankfully, I had my trusty cowgirl boots on, and I stayed upright. And ... I could see the lead rope! So I walked really fast and caught up with this hot-footing donkey, and grabbed the end of the lead rope. Success! She was caught once more.

So rather than do the hitch thing, with the rope not being very good for that, I just started leading her down the road, and my husband walked with me. (He had gotten out of the pickup, and followed ME as I followed the donkey!) That was good, because that dark dirt road was a little spooky, knowing what kind of wild critters COULD be roaming about. If anyone had looked out and seen us go by, that would've been a picture for sure. Hubby and me and donkey walking along, followed by our friend's pickup, followed by a sheriff's pickup, at 11 p.m. on an Oklahoma dirt road.

So after I had asked hubby several times, "Is this the turn-in?" and the answer had been, "Not yet," we finally reached the turn in. The road had been uphill some. The donkey had been stubborn. I'd had to basically pull the donkey to keep it walking, or it would stubbornly stop. When we got to the driveway, it was really uphill. Let's just say hubby and I both got our exercise last night! The sheriff went on his way, we got the donkey settled in the yard, and headed back home. Thus ended our "escaped donkey" escapade. And I got to write a post about something CURRENT. Exciting things do happen in Oklahoma!

  2. He's a good sheriff, too. :) He had to sit there for a good while watching that donkey until we got there. Talk about boring, I'm sure. LOL
