Should've Been a Vet

My "what I want to be when I grow up" ideas changed as I went through childhood. First, I wanted to be a nurse, just like my favorite aunt who was an R.N. Mom even made me a little nurse dress and nurse hat to wear and play in! Then my aunt passed away when I was 11, and Mom said I never mentioned being a nurse after that.

Then, I had a lot of creativeness, so I thought I wanted to be an artist. But, you know, there's that "starving artist" problem, unless you're REALLY GOOD.

Then after the horse bug bit me, I entertained notions of becoming a veterinarian. That idea finally fell by the wayside, but I did have a little exposure to what it might be like when I was in the Horse Science program in community college.

Before I went to college, I had gotten to the point of giving my own horse his shots. I think the first year I had Trigger, we had a guy vaccinate him for us, but somewhere along the line I decided I could go ahead and do that.

Well, later on at college one day, our instructor had us all gather in the alleyway of the barn to observe the way to vaccinate a horse. There are two spots - on the neck, and in the hip. He showed us the particulars of giving a shot in the neck area, then had one girl come up and try it. Well, she was nervous and unsure, which is understandable when fooling with a needle and a 1,000-pound-plus animal! She went to put the needle in, but it was slo-o-o-o-ow motion, she was gonna EASE that thing in. The horse started getting really jittery! So the instructor called on me ... O-BOY, was I glad I'd given Trigger shots before! So I eyed where the needle was to go, thumped the back of my fist on the spot a couple of times (to fool the horse), and quickly stuck the needle in and gave the shot. WHEW! So ... maybe I should've been a vet. Then again, maybe NOT! I'm alright with being a musician - pianos don't kick!

  1. I wanted to be a vet for several years too!! And then decided I'd rather work at an ice cream place to be able to make those beautiful cones with the little flip over on the top. I struck out both ways. My brother became the vet, and now we argue about whose patients are the most trying on our patience :-)

  2. That's interesting, Melanie - I'd like to hear the debate over animal vs. human patients!

  3. Rhonda, this post made me smile. I wanted to a be a pediatric nurse. However, with my personality it was probably a blessing I didn't. I don't handle emergencies well at all. HAHA I also thought about becoming a birthing doula. Again, probably a blessing I didn't do it! LOL But I've always been fascinated by pregnancy and birth.
However, I think it would be a lot of fun to be a vet tech! Not necessarily a full blown vet, but still get to work with animals hands on. Maybe someday when my children are grown that's what I'll be "when I grow up!" =)

  4. That's something when our "interests" and "reality" clash! That would be cool if you could do something about your interest in being a vet tech. :)
