Dad always did a good job driving and pulling the camper.

Mom riding in the back. I went through a phase where riding in the back seat made me carsick, so in this instance, I was sitting up front with Dad, and Mom was in the back seat. Not sure what was funny here, but something was! You can see the homemade camper out the back window. And you can see the blanket ...

... in the back window.

When we were at Red River, NM, the campground we stayed at had its own trout pond. One time Mom was sitting there at the bank of the pond, we were all fishing or whatever. Well, she got a little chilly, so she went to the car and pulled out the red plaid blanket and wrapped it around herself. There were lots of people around the pond, and one man nearby called her a "squaw." So that kind of stuck for awhile!
Well ...
... I am happy to say that this sturdy little blanket is still with us, and has been in all of OUR vehicles, too. I think it's made out of acrylic, so even though it's faded a little, it's still in good shape. And it has three more companions (from the thrift store, of course!) of varying colors in the very back in case we need them. But this one has a place of honor, within easy reach. It's my favorite!
I'll just bet it feels like a little bit of your parents are wrapped up in it...and you can still feel their love for you and CAMPING....I wish I had his camper to PINK it OUT...and use it for a play house.....Memories are the truly the best treasures....
ReplyDeleteIt's a good idea to keep one in the car for sure!! And nice to have one with so much history!
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Robin. :) I have no idea where the camper ended up. But if I had any say, I would've let you have it to fix!
ReplyDeleteYes, Melanie, they're handy if you get cold, out fishing, kids get sleepy, etc.
