Working On the Next Dream

I have some long-standing dreams within my homemaking realm that include having a clothesline, having a garden and having chickens. I'd enjoyed having a clothesline at the apartment we were in, but when we moved in this house, there was no clothesline. But that finally got remedied this last summer, thanks to Hubby and older Son! I am SO THANKFUL! I've been enjoying it fully!

Now .... we're getting a plan going .... to put in a garden. Our yard is long and narrow, but we've got a patch staked out that we think will work. This will not only be something I've wanted to get back to doing, it will also be an EXCELLENT hands-on science study for younger Son! Not only plants, but we also think we want to make an irrigation set-up, since the yard is slightly sloped.

Younger Son's section will be in the south end, which will include pumpkins and corn. In the north section, I want to have giant sunflowers, tomatoes, green beans, peas, lettuce, maybe some flowers .... and maybe a surprise. If that "surprise" works out, I'll post pictures. It will be something right away.

So we'll go get a good digging spade at Tractor Supply here in a few days, and start spading up this patch, so we can start doing things in the spring. HOPEFULLY IT WILL SNOW SOME THIS WINTER and we can have good moisture to soak in. I also want to get some straw bales for mulch and other purposes. WE HAVE PLANS. :) And ... I'm not going to completely rule out chickens. Maybe we could get a few this next spring.

So hopefully within this next year, we will see some good things in this patch of ground!

  1. Rhonda--start laying down magazines or newspaper--or even cardboard boxes and cover with a little straw or even some soil to hold everything down. Throw all your kitchen scraps (not meat or dairy) on them through the winter--and I think you will find your digging will be a lot easier in the spring-and your soil will be better too! Enjoy your project!

  2. Thanks Melanie, I'll have to see what I can do about that! We're pretty excited about this. :) I think we NEEDED something like this to do!
