Peeling Potatoes

I just stuck a recipe for how Mom used to make roast beef over on one of my other blogs, "Mother's Recipe Box." I got to the part about "peeling potatoes," and a story she had told me several times came to mind.

She grew up on a farm and was the oldest child, which meant she helped her mother with various things. This story happened when she was pretty little yet, maybe 5 years old? Anyway, Grandma had told her to peel some potatoes to help get a meal. She was stubborn and mad and didn't want to. So she went out on the step with the potatoes and a paring knife, and sat there peeling potatoes, bawling the whole time. Well, here came one of her boy cousins walking across the field, and he wondered why she was crying. I think he was just a little older than her. When he found out she was just crying over having to peel potatoes, he said that wasn't any big deal. He went in and got another paring knife, then came out and sat down by her on the steps and helped her peel potatoes. She said they got to laughing, and it turned into a lot of fun! So it's not a bad thing to have help doing a chore - it makes it go faster and easier, along with the good company! She never forgot her cousin helping her and making things better.

  3. very sweet story, and my - how things have changed! so many people only eat their potatoes at a fast food place, so many children don't even know what real potatoes are, let alone know how to peel them.
