Enjoying My Yard ... Finally

This property of ours is kind of strange in ways. It's basically O.K., but it was in the midst of being remodeled when we moved in, right on top of all that. The walls are re-sheetrocked, the windows are new, and we have the basic items we need. But the walls need paint, a ceiling needs re-done, ceiling spackle needs removed, the stairway is in deep need of some "cosmetic attention," and so on. We've got plenty of projects for whenever we want to tackle them!

One thing that should be tackled soon is the fact that our back door is unusable for reasons. It needs replaced or re-hung. It's located on the back porch, where the washing machine is. One thing I haven't taken much advantage of yet is spending time in the back yard, because this unusable door prevents direct access to it. So if I've done any sitting in the yard, it's been out front. To go to the back yard has just seemed like too much trouble having to go out the front door and walk clear around back there.

This has seemed to change with the arrival of my new clothesline!

Today I put PLENTY of laundry out. The first load went out fairly early. After I placed the last clothespin on that first round, I paused. Wow, I realized that the birds were singing. All kinds of birds. It was a varitable chorus! A concert! I thought maybe I should take this in for a bit, so I sat down. I have a spring-bottomed porch chair that was my Grandma W.'s, and the metal patio table that we had in our own yard at home where I grew up. These two items are in our back yard. So I sat there, felt "at home," the breeze was fairly cool yet, and even the rustling of the trees was wonderful to hear. And the birds. It was peaceful, relaxing, and totally enjoyable. And I didn't mind that I had to come out the front door to get there!

When we lived in the apartment, we had no trees with birds out back. We had a "grand central station" street, with traffic. It was not peaceful, nor shady, and I didn't like to be out there at all. It's a whole different scene in our back yard now, and I thought, "I need to do this more often!" So ... this clothesline is certainly bringing some dividends I wasn't expecting. I need to get outside more anyway, just to relax, even if only for a little while. The inside-the-house chores may have to wait their turn while I sit and watch my laundry flap and wave in the breeze. And listen to the birds and trees.

  1. Oh yeah, you've discovered one of my favorite hobbies. What a wonderful adventure it is to listen to all the chatter and then to start locating the soloists!! Enjoy it!

  2. The "star of the show," especially later in the day, seems to be the mockingbird! What a concert. LOL But I enjoy hearing all the birds. :)
