Favorite Jobs

I actually got laundry on the line again this morning before going to work .... mostly towels. The towels you see in the above picture. Towels that now smell wonderfully of the warm, fresh air from spending all day on the laundry lines. I love the smell of fresh laundry from the line!

I know various homemakers have favorite chores and not-so-favorite chores. Some despise doing laundry, but that happens to be my favorite chore. The chore I despise (but I try not to, because it is a blessing in disguise) is washing dishes. I will put that off 'til the cows come home. (So what's my job I go to each work day? DISHWASHER. Ha!)

I sat on the bed, folding all the towels in a quick manner, enjoying it, enjoying stacking them, maybe it's the high-functioning autism thing, I love lining things up, or stacking things, or arranging things. That's something I do enjoy at my dishwashing job ... arranging stuff in the washing crates, arranging clean things on the drying rack.

The thought popped into my head, I should fold stuff for a living. Oh wait, I did, at one point in my life. How could I forget that? And I really haven't, I just have odd thoughts, then think, wait a minute ....

Back when the kids were little, and we needed extra income, we had a laundry business in our small town that did laundry for three bigger hospitals in that area of the state, plus some smaller ones, plus customer laundry. There was a guy hired to run the washers, and one of the business people ran the dryers, but the rest of us workers handled all the other things. This included the "mangle" for sheets, pillowcases and surgery sheets. Then there was a LOT-and-I-mean-a-LOT of folding of other items .... blankets, the "mangled" (pressed) sheets, pillowcases, towels, washcloths, P-gowns ("patient gowns"), aprons, you name it. And each hospital had a certain way they wanted their P-gowns folded, so they would fit on their shelves just right. I think I still remember how. Scrubs got hung on hangers. Doctor lab coats got pressed. Everything got wrapped in plastic or in a plastic garment bag, to be sent back to the hospital.

With my love of laundry, this job was ideal, and for the most part, I really enjoyed everyone who worked there, and we usually all got along. I've pretty much considered it my "favorite job" of various ones I've had.

Now, with a job as a dishwasher in a senior citizen center for the noon meal, I have to say I have found another favorite job, and maybe a little more so, just for reasons at this time in my life. Actually, though, it may just have to be a tie as to which job is my favorite. But right now, it's a good job as far as the work goes (I can do it without too much stress), the people are all great, and it's steady to help our income.

So with several jobs in my life being interesting, some being not-so-great, some being very much "character-building" and learning experiences, I'm glad to have a couple that have been a real joy.
